Cine Peñalver opened November 13, 1973, with “Aeropuerto”, known in America as “Airport”.

Film director Pedro Almovodar’s reflections in his Covid-19 lockdown diaries from March 2020 mentions Cine Peñalver as where his film, “Pepi, Luci, Bom”, premiered in 1980. As published in the British Film Institute (BFI), Mr. Almovodar noted the Peñalver was where re-releases were played but to him it was if it were the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles.

For the more curious, Almovodar’s four part diaries are filled with memories of Antonio Banderas, Warren Beatty, Sean Connery, Jane Fonda, Madonna, as well as his favorite Hollywood films.

The former Cine Peñalver closed in 1999 and has most recently been occupied by Ofiprix, an office furniture showroom.
