Gilbert Hall Pictures

In the Dorset resort of Swanage, the first permanent picture show was set up in Gilbert Hall. Operated by Southern Cinemas, Gilbert Hall Pictures opened in 1912.

The hand-cranked projectors were situated in the gallery. They were relocated to the newly-built Electric Cinema (see separate Cinema Treasures entry) when that opened in June 1916. The projectionist, Gerry Stockley, also moved to the new cinema, and Gilbert Hall Pictures closed down.

The Hall was used for various types of entertainments, latterly as Purbeck Palace of Amusements.

It was demolished, as part of area re-development, in 2004.
