Shields Brothers launched the 300-seat Crystal Theatre on July 4, 1908 in downtown Humboldt, Nebraska in the Linn Building just east of the Square. It opened as a movie theatre and continued in operation for 12 years.
During that time it got competition from the Humboldt Moving Picture Theatre (aka the Humboldt Theatre) which would be purchased by the Paramount Theatre Circuit. A news note in 1920 states that Paramount Theatre Circuit then took on the competing Crystal Theatre too, basically, closed it so there wouldn’t be two motion picture theatres.
The Crystal Theatre became a clothing store after a retrofit. The Humboldt Theatre continued without competition after it closed in the 1960’s. The Crystal Theatre was later demolished and office space was built on the site.
