The new Plaza Theatre opened on July 10, 1937 with Dick Powell in “On the Avenue” supported by various short subject films. The theatre was purchased by the operator of the rival, Humboldt Theatre in January of 1954.

Operator Fred Schuler determined that both theatres couldn’t be profitable. He equipped the Humboldt Theatre with widescreen projection to play the first CinemaScope title in town on January 2, 1955. The Plaza Theatre, meanwhile, was closed permanently in 1954.
