Star Palace

Located in the Partick district in the West End of Glasgow. The building was originally built as a mechanical workshop. The 1,005-seat Star Palace was opened in February 1910 by Star Animated Pictures. It was rebuilt in September 1914 to the plans of architect Charles J. McNair. In 1920 it was sold to Star Palaces Ltd. and underwent another rebuild to the plans of architect William Reid. It was closed as a cinema in July 1925.

It was converted into the Fyfe and Fyfe Palais de Danse and in the 1930’s a new facade was built in an Art Deco style, with a tower feature on the left-hand side. In later years it became a bingo club.

The Art Deco style facade and foyer have been demolished (c.2020) and a block of flats with retail units have been built. There is access through the new block of flats to the Carlton bingo club, which still operates in the original auditorium, but the auditorium is now totally hidden from view from the street.
