New Castle Theatre

New Castle Amusement Co. began service of its New Castle Theatre. The company was incorporated in 1919. The small town silent-era theatre is sadly most likely remembered for a fatal fire in 1924. A minor fire in the projection booth on October 20, 1924 led to an unnecessary rush to the exits in which one child was killed and 35 injured trying to escape from the balcony. The fire did little to no damage as it was contained to the fireproof booth.

The theatre reopened and was listed as open into 1931 as a silent theatre. Base on newspaper coverage, it may have actually gone out of business in the late-1920’s. Folks in New Castle only had to drive a little under five miles to see films at the long-running Eminence Theatre in nearby Eminence, Kentucky.
