News About This Theater

Blair Theatre

The Blair Theatre opened December 24, 1928 with 720 seats. Located in downtown Belleville, it was granted a $200,000 tax credit by the state of Kansas in 2000 towards the conversion and renovation of the former movie house into a cultural and community center. The Spanish Colonial style facade with its polychrome terra-cotta and red brickwork is notable for its vintage marquee and vertical sign.

A beautiful color photo of the facade is on this web site, fourth row down, at the extreme right. Click on it to isolate it, and then click again to enlarge it.

The grant was back in 2003. The local Main Street group states on their website that the Blair is under renovation and opening soon. No timetable, though.

It has 208 seats on the main floor. The plans are to open the balcony sometime later.

A friend of mine used to manage the Blair in the early 1960’s. Commonwealth amusement was running the theatre and my friend worked for them. There was also a Drive-in at Belleville. The ran the drive-in in the summertime and the Blair in the wintertime. This was, of course, before the days of cable tv and daylight saving time. So the drive-in could or probably is, long gone. Sorry, I don’t remember the name of the drive-in, but I do remember seeing “The Misfits”, with Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe.

2013: Refurbished marquee, in original red/yellow color scheme, updated with digital front and side panels – Belleville’s dedication to fully restoring this cinematic gem is just astounding… BRAVO!
