Uptown Theatre

Viewing: Photo | Street View

The Uptown Theatre is one of those quaint small town theatres with the old theatre atmosphere. You are greeted with a smile and the warmth premiates throughout your visit. The theatre opened in 1936 and originally seated 669. By 1941 it was operated by Commonwealth Amusement, and they continued to operated the Uptown Theatre until at least 1950.

It has been remodeled in an outstanding Art Deco style. The front facade is two stories high and one side it starts out with a dark grey color with scalloped concrete running down the front, then leads into yellow color in the same style with the middle in the same style but in white. It has a small V-shaped marquee with a vertical running from the center of the marquee to above the building. The lobby has been recently redone and in bright colors. The auditorium even though only now seating 350 is spacious and in warm contracting colors.

There should be a second “r” in Carrollton.

The date given with the photo is March 19, 2008. If the date is accurate, this theater must be closed.

The phone is no longer in service and there are no listings for now showing on any of the sites so I would say that the theatre is closed.

LM, I don’t know the date of the photo that you linked but recently all the doors were covered over with brown paper so you couldn’t even see in the lobby.

That last photo is from May of 2009. I don’t know when this theater closed but it also looks closed the March 2008 photo.

The marquee sign is the same design at the former Plaza Theatre in Trenton, MO (maybe the theatres had the same architect?):
