I don’t know why that comment was saved to this listing. Anyway, here is an updated link for the Jackson Theater photo.

Here is a recent photo of a supermarket located at this address. Photo is from the Charlie Kraybill website. Caption with photo reads “745 Westchester Ave. (below E. 156th St.). Opened in 1919. Later became the Coleman Theatre, then the Louis, finally the Borinquen. Razed around 1947”. Is the supermarket the same building as the theater, or was this theater demolished?

Sorry! I meant Michael Miller’s list of BRONX theatres! I don’t know if the now deceased historian ever compiled one for Brooklyn.

The Louis Theatre was “modernized” into the Jackson in 1935 by architect Ben Schlanger. According to historian Michael Miller’s list of Brooklyn theatres, the house first opened in 1919 as Coleman’s.

Listed in the Film Daily Yearbook 1930 edition as the Louis Theatre with a seating capacity of 728.

By the 1941 edition of F.D.Y. it was the Jackson Theatre with 599 seats (same details in the 1943 edition).

In the 1950 edition of F.D.Y. it is the Borinquen Theatre with a seating capacity of 570. Disappeared from listings in 1957 edition.

It’s funny those matrons were always overweight and the uniform two sizes too small :)
