There was also a Bell Theatre at 2901 N. Fifth St., (1914-1929)
This theatre opened as the Star Theatre and later became known as the Bell Theatre in 1929. The property is shown as vacant land on the Philadelphia Tax Records.
Chuck is right, this was known as the Star Theater before being named the Bell Theater. Alterations were done to this building in 1925 and that is most likely the year it was renamed Bell Theater.
A Wurlitzer theater organ opus 1128 style 108 was installed in the Bell Theater on 8/13/1925.
This is in the Grays Ferry neighborhood, south of U of P. I drove around quite a bit in this area in the early eighties, but I can’t recall seeing any old theaters. I wasn’t looking for any, admittedly.
I forgot to mention that this theater is demolished.
Does anyone have a photo of this theater? My mother spent a lot of time there as a child.
