State Theatre

Not much is known about this former neighborhood movie house on Main Street East. It was opened around 1926, and by 1941, was part of the Schine Circuit. It was still open in 1950. The façade is completely remodeled, but from the side one can make out that it was once a theatre.

When I was a youngster, my grandmother commented on how lovely it was inside this place. It’s been office space for as long as I can remember. By 2020 it had been converted into housing.

The State Theater building continued to be used as the Youth Building of the Hillside Children’s Center until 2017. It was refaced and became Warfield Square apartments, named after the family of William Warfield. Rochester is still home to Thomas Warfield, Williams' nephew, who lives a few blocks away.
