Monroe Theatre Late 60's

Viewing: Photo | Street View

This was one of two theatres located on Route 22 in Monroeville. It was opened in the early 60’s by Associated Theatres. The theatre had Norelco AAII 70mm projectors and magnetic stereo sound.

Purchased by Cinemette in 1975 and closed in the late ‘70’s

Update: I was at the shopping center yesterday.

The old theater is located next to Value City Furniture on Rt 22. Next door there is a closed under 21 dance club that is currently vacant. This is where the Monroe was located. At the entrance, you can see where the tiocket booth was located, plus there is a movie poster window box in the area as well.

You can look inside the door and it looks like a mess.

Too bad there are no theaters left in Monroeville. It suprises me considering that is a huge shopping corridor.

This theatre was also used by McKnight Development Corporation for the first Chuck E. Cheese’s Pizza Time Theatre when it opened in Pittsburgh in 1981.

“Dawn of the Dead” was filmed at the Monroeville Mall—I wonder if this theater was opened long enough to show it!?

After The Monroe closed it was converted into a Oasis Records and Tapes in 1979, Chuck E. Cheese’s in 81 or 82, now it’s a Monster Mini Golf. I have not been in Monster Golf, but was in there for Oasis and Chuck E. and the 4 projection booth hole were still there.

I believe that the last movie shown there was Coming Home.

It’s amazing that Monroeville had at least three theatres and now none are left.

I still think this would be a great area for a new or modernized cinema.
