The Megaplex was originally to be built by Edwards Theatres but when they filed for bankruptcy the plans were picked up by Megaplex Theatres. This was the second theatre to be built by Megaplex Theatres in the Salt Lake area and opened in November 2001.
At first the plans called for thirteen auditoriums, but two were combined to make one large auditorium. All the auditoriums feature stadium seating and digital stereo sound.
The theatre has a very glitzy entrance with a large rounded marquee with miles of colorful neon. The interior is very upscale and plush.

Like three of the other four current locations of the Megaplex Theatres chain, the Megaplex 12 at The Gateway was designed by FFKR Architects of Salt Lake City.
