Merlot at the Movies
Rolling Stone has sounded off on the increasing popularity of luxury theaters such as iPic and the rebranding of select screens at AMC. They detail the thought going into the type of food and the attraction behind this upscale experience.
At the end they pose an interesting question, if cinemas are trying to survive by luring back in the middle class, is this the best direction?

3-D Film Expo returns to the Egyptian
LOS ANGELES, CA — Celebrating 60 years of 3-D, the World 3-D Movie Expo is coming back to the Egyptian Theatre in September with its best lineup yet. John Wayne’s “Hondo”, classics like “Kiss Me Kate” and cult favorites like “Jaws 3-D” highlight the thorough program along with long-lost international oddities.

Sun-Ray to expand with additional screen
JACKSONVILLE, FL — Locals have been supporting the Sun-Ray Cinema for years and now they’re truly being rewarded. They plan to open a second 45-seat theatre next door in the next month to focus on art-house films. The owner is also looking to build another nearby theater to give the neighborhood even more options.

Liberty burns down - no cause found
PASCO, WA — The long-standing Liberty Theatre is no more thanks to a fire last week that gutted the theatre. Arson has been ruled out but no one knows the real cause. The owner had been renovating it to bring a retail tenant in. Now suddenly the theatre that meant so much to the community is gone.

Big changes for the Lynbrook 6
LYNBROOK, NY — The Lynbrook 6 has been fading for years with outdated seats and equipment. But Regal is ready to invest in the location through a major renovation that will bring the complex an additional 9 screens. No word on a completion date but the site will include all the standard amenities including a Regal Premium Experience room.

Senator to reopen October 10
BALTIMORE, MD — There’s been no shortage of activity the past few years at the Senator Theatre from ownership changes to restoration. A look at the theater’s page on this site reveals a list of news links too lengthy to even choose from.
Hopefully, all the news will be positive from here forward as the theatre is scheduled to reopen October 10 with a throwback to one of its finest moments, a screening a of John Waters' “Hairspray.” It had its premiere there 25 years ago.

More than 2,000 vehicles jam the US 23 DI for Bricks Flicks
FLINT, MI — More than 2,000 vehicles jammed the US 23 Drive-in Theatre. Along with the classic vehicles and the DJ spinning oldies, there was also a fashion contest, a dance contest and a singer performing songs from the feature film “Grease” which was shown on two screens at 9:30 pm. Prior to the film was a special trailer celebrating the 80th anniversary of the first drive-in theater in Camden, NJ.

How New Mexico is saving its historic movie theaters
CLAYTON, NM — While theaters around the world are struggling to convert to digital, New Mexico has been getting ahead of the curve by investing in its historic cinemas. A very interesting piece at Preservation Nation showcases the history of the Luna Theater and how the community has enabled it to stay open. Thanks to New Mexico’s MainStreet Historic Theater Initiative, they secured funding and were able to construct a robust volunteer staff to keep costs down.
Obviously, it takes a proactive local government to pull something like this off, but it’s nice to see everyone coming together for one cause.

Cocteau cinema reopens thanks to Game of Thrones scribe
SANTA FE, NM — The Jean Cocteau Cinema reopened the other week after it was announced in April that George R.R. Martin (“Game of Thrones”) had purchased it. Right now it looks like they will focus on classics and art-house fare. It had been closed since 2006.
