The following is an ongoing, semi-regular series of retrospectives on CINERAMA, the legendary motion picture process that kicked off the widescreen revolution. The series focuses on providing a market-by-market historical record of when and where Cinerama and its multi-panel clones were exhibited. Visalia shopping center seeks megaplex movie theater
VISALIA, CA — The owners of the Packwood Creek Shopping Center are entertaining offers from movie chains for a new megaplex. It would be the centerpiece of the new development, The Grove at Packwood Creek, with ample parking and dining options nearby.

Capital Cinema looking to future
ABERDEEN, SD — The Capitol Theatre hopes to raise money for a digital projector as well as a second screen next door. The 86-year old cinema currently presents a mix of film and live entertainment.

Ellsworth Air Force Base movie theater to close
The theater at the Ellsworth Air Force Base is yet another casualty of the digital revolution. The local Carmike theatre will start offering a military discount but the convenience of on base movies for the military and their families is no more.

Cinema City to offer 4D cinema ads soon

A few years ago the Israeli company Cinema City International signed a cooperation agreement with the South Korean firm CJ 4Dplex, a company that provides 4DXTM cinema systems for exhibition firms along with programming content from major Hollywood studios.
This year, however, it seems the cooperation of both companies will start to bear fruit. Not only will Cinema City restore some of its most visited European auditoriums into the new technology, but from this process also advertisers may benefit.

Higginsville’s campaign to save movie theater comes up short
HIGGINSVILLE, MO — Even winning a Reader’s Digest grant isn’t enough to keep the beloved Davis Theatre open. Its owners are putting it up for sale for $320,000 after a slow year and no funds to purchase a digital projector.

Record year at the movies
For the first time in three years, movie ticket sales were up this year with a total of $10.8 Billion. Analysts are predicting an even bigger year in 2013 with entries from franchises such as Thor, Superman and the Hunger Games.

Movie subscription plan saves Oakhurst theater
OAKHURST, CA — With only hours to spare, the movie subscription plan to save the MET Cinema was a success. They’re aiming to reopen February 1 but still need more members for future improvements.

California Theatre to reopen after years of planning
PITTSBURG, CA — There will be a gala on January 19 to celebrate to reopening of the California Theatre. They’ve sunk $7.6 Million into it to restore the murals and bring the theatre back to its original appearance. The city-owned building hasn’t hired an operator yet but this sounds like a great new chapter for it after sitting empty for almost 60 years!
