    Remembering Cinerama

    REMEMBERING CINERAMA
    Part II: Chicago

With last week’s DVD and Blu-ray release of the Cinerama classic “How The West Was Won,” as well as the recent screenings of “How The West Was Won” and “2001: A Space Odyssey” at the Cinerama Dome in Los Angeles, I thought this would be a great time to take a comprehensive look at Cinerama for those who experienced it when it was new and for those who know it only as history.

The following is Part Two of an ongoing series of retrospective postings on the Cinerama process (and copycat formats such as Cinemiracle and Kinopanorama) which provides a reminder of the many great movie palaces in which these memorable events took place. Part I: New York City was posted a few days ago. This entry focuses on the Cinerama presentations in Chicago.

    Enjoy the flashback!

  • Largest seat count in a 1960’S single screen theater?

What are some of the highest seat counts for USA single screen theaters constructed during the 1960’s theater construction boom era?The largest General Cinema seat count seen listed in Boxoffice magazine was 2000 seats at their Buffalo, NY Thruway Plaza Cinema. There was also a listing for slightly over 2000 seats for a theater being built by Associated Independent Theaters in Patchogue, NY.

Many Thanks to all, and please patronize the movies this weekend!!

    Wonderful Showman has passed away

Bill Hertz, former VP of operations at Mann Theatres and its preceding companies passed away in late August at the age of 84.

This isn’t really an obituary but a remembrance of a fine gentleman that shaped my career and my life. Anyone who has worked for Fox West Coast Theatres, National General Theatres or Mann Theatres will know him and share the sense of loss.

I met Mr. Hertz in 1962 while working a studio sneak preview at the Fox Theatre in Riverside, California. This man had a presence that stood out in a lobby full of posturing movie types. He was the consummate executive, with a 32 tooth smile and a firm handshake. He never inserted himself into the scene but controlled all theatrical elements with a finesse that made those who worked for him respond in the most direct and positive ways.

Over the years I had the good fortune to move up in the company and ultimately have a office just down the hall from Mr. Hertz. He continued to mentor us young pups and add a great deal of class to anything he choose to do.

  • Connecticut Film Fest (Finale) is granted a reshoot for 2009

DANBURY, CT — With a very successful 2008 behind them, the Connecticut Film Festival looks towards next year.

“Very positive,” “money well spent,” and “impetus for a signature event with tangible results” were some of the phrases a Danbury Common Council ad hoc committee used to describe the 2008 Connecticut Film Festival, which overtook downtown for six days last May. Pending approval from the city’s Corporation Counsel, the committee unanimously approved $65,000 for the touring festival to make its final stop in Danbury again next May.

Yes, that’s $10,000 less than the city gave festival organizer Tom Carrruthers last year. Carrruthers says he wants to give the city some relief, and will have more money from the state and time to prepare for the festival in ‘09.
