Neighborhood Flix Cinema closes after 1 year

DENVER, CO — Open for less than a year, the Neighborhood Flix Cinema & Cafe closed unexpectedly Monday because the three-screen theater could not secure first-run movies.

The multiplex was coupled with a cafe where moviegoers could dine before or after a movie, or even take their food with them into the theater.

Flix had intended to hold a fundraising event October 9th to help keep the theater open. However, on Monday evening, the owners notified all 20 employees that the theater was closing immediately and that they would try to sell the business.

  • ca. 1915 projection equipment

Hello folks: I am helping to rehab a theatre built in 1914 to show silent movies. I found a 1923 listing of the equipment that was in the theatre at the time, and the list included “1 superlit screen,” “2 powers 6-A projectors,” “2-1 sheet adv. magazine,” and “1 rewind.” I can figure out the rewind, but I’m wondering if anyone on this list can tell me more about the screen, projectors, and adv. machine.

    Thanks!

Movies on Demand at the Movies

A Brazilian company wants to bring movies on demand to a theater near you.

On the MovieMobz website, people can ask other filmgoers if they want to see a certain picture at a certain theater. If enough people sign up, the theater is booked.

The number of people needed varies depending on the theater. For example, if a 120-seat cinema typically sells 30 tickets on a Monday night, it will only take 40 “MovieMobzters” to schedule the screening.

  • Westcott Theater reopens

SYRACUSE, NY — The Wescott Theater, formerly the Westcott Cinema, reopened over the weekend as a performing arts center and bar after being closed for 11 months.

The new owners have torn up seats, installed spotlights, built a bar in one of the hall’s corners, and added a stage underneath the movie screen. The Wescott is looking to host music acts and community events as well as film festivals.

  • CinemaSmith in Coolidge Corner is closing

The CinemaSmith, which is sort of an attachment to the Brookline Booksmith in Brookline’s Coolidge Corner, and located in the basement of the Brookline Booksmith, will be closing shortly. Many movies are on sale there.

When I asked the young woman working behind the counter at Brookline Booksmith why CinemaSmith was closing, she replied that Netflix and lots of DVD’s, on the long run, were causing CinemaSmith to make little to no money, so they decided it wasn’t worth it to stay in business any longer. Even though CinemaSmith isn’t a movie theatre, and though I very seldom used it, it was a little unsettling to learn of its closing.
