Los Angeles Times profiles L.A.-area theatres
The Los Angeles Times has published a “best of” article profiling several L.A. area theatres.
We’re lucky. As blockbuster moviegoing season gets into full swing this Memorial Day weekend, we live in a place where it’s just as easy to see that new, hot indie as it is to see that old, familiar Indy (think crystal skulls). We get to do so in any one of dozens of unique theaters. And the price? Not so bad, considering the alternatives.
In Chicago, for example, the Village Roadshow Gold Class Cinema chain is slated to open a theater later this year that will charge an estimated $35 per ticket. That gets you reserved recliners in a 40-seat theater, food service brought to your seat, special parking and the latest in projection and sound innovations.
But a little intrepid researching around Southern California has revealed all those amenities and then some. Try signature cocktails. Leather couches. Refreshments from around the globe. Granted, they may not all be found at the same theater, but on the other hand, our admission prices top out at $15 — at the El Capitan, of all places.

Take A Minute To Help Save The Boyd Theatre

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The following was sent in by Friends of the Boyd:
Bids to buy Philadelphia’s historic Boyd Theatre are due Wednesday May 28, 2008. Some bids will be to preserve the theater, but some bids will be for the purpose of destroying downtown Philadelphia’s last movie palace! Once bids are in, Live Nation could quickly choose a new owner so we need YOUR HELP.
In listing the Boyd Theatre on its national endangered list, the National Trust for Historic Preservation has provided easy steps for the public to advocate the survival of the Art Deco movie palace. Friends of the Boyd are asking every one of your members and supporters to please immediately visit “What you can do” and SEND THE EMAILS encouraging Live Nation to select an offer that will preserve the Boyd and reopen it as a public venue, and also write Mayor Nutter and Governor Rendell.
And, please circulate this request to your own email lists!

New NYC-area theater rumors
BRONX, NY — Has anybody heard which theater chain will operate on the site of the Kingsbridge Armory on Jerome Avenue?? Related Companies won the site development proposal from NYC and they have announced a theater as part of a mixed use development plan for the armory.
Months back there it was announced that National Amusements would build on Broadway in the Marble Hill section in the West 200 block area near the new Target store. That project was being developed by Bernard Rosenshein of nearby Westchester County, NY as reported in the Bronx Review Press. Not sure if that project is still active.
SECAUCUS, NJ — Heard that the Kerasotes chain is about to sign a lease to build somwhere in Secaucus. No further details. Anybody know a bit more???

Screenworks 14 closes
BRIDGEVILLE, PA — The Screenworks 14 Cinema in has closed. This theatre used to called the Star City South Fayette 14. It opened in 2000 amid much hoopla, with city officials happy to add a long-dormant piece of property to the tax rolls. It was to be the first of six planned Star City theaters, including two in West Virginia, but it was the only one ever built.
The problem was that the 20-screen Destinta Theater, which screened more popular first-run movies, dinners, and table service, opened up nearby. Destinta also killed the Loews 20 North Versailles (which lasted less than two years). Star City lasted only from 2000 to 2005. It was re-opened a couple of years ago as the Screenworks 14 Cinemas and operated as a 2nd-run bargain house.

Fight for Grand Ecran Place d'Italie
PARIS, FRANCE —
Hello,
I enjoy Cinema Treasures enormously. I am glad I am not the only one obsessed with huge movie theaters. I will be going back to Paris this summer.
I lived in Paris for seven years and one of my favorite movie theatres was the Grand Ecran Place d'Italie, not a classic palace but a modern marvel. Great cinema. Imagine my surprise when I discover that they want to close it down. Lucky for us, there is a big move to stop the raze. They have a website that contains many pics. You might be interested.
Thanks,
A.P.

Alcazar Theatre info
SAN FRANCISCO, CA — I’ve been researching a San Francisco artist, John McQuarrie, for 2 years. I have a Sept. 8, 1912 S.F. Call newspaper article that mentions McQuarrie had painted panels in the Alcazar Theatre. In Tillmany’s “Theaters of San Francisco”, there is a picture of the interior of the Alcazar and one can see a part of a painting on the ceiling above the proscenium. I would like to find a better picture of the painting.
Thank you,
Bruno Morelli
