In looking at a 1951 aerial photo, it certainly looks like the drive in could hold more than 75 cars. However, it is on the small side. Rough guess: 150 – 200 cars.

Plus, a 1971 aerial photo shows the drive-in looking fairly well kept. It may have been closed for 11 years, but everything was still up and the property mowed.

A closer address (at least for Google) is 1723 Mecklenburg Highway, Mooresville, NC. The drive-in was located just to the south along the east side of the highway.

The property itself is totally overgrown with trees, but they form the pattern of the ramps. http://tinyurl.com/zhep7ec

From the aerials, it appears that the drive-in existed well past 1964. In fact, it was transformed from a single to a four-screen well after 1964.

The area covered by the drive-in was considerable. The screen was located in the parking lot next door to the auto salvage site. You can still see traces of the outline of the drive-in that emanated from the screen southwest towards what is now an abandoned trailer park. http://tinyurl.com/zkeemg3

The Admiral Twin in Tulsa is one. It was featured in the film “The Outsiders” although that particular screen burned down in 2009. A metal one replaced it and the drive in is still open today.

According to the Google Street Map taken in October, 2015, the screen still stands. Also, a 2013 aerial photo shows the screen standing as well. So perhaps Hurricane Sandy didn’t blow it down.
