Sound and Digital Conversion at the Fabian 8 Cinema.
Work started on converting all 8 houses to digital expected to be finished by mid March 2012. More RealD 3D and new screens from Big Sky Industries.
Theatre 5 is now a beta test location for Danley Sound Labs new cinema loudspeaker line. Designer Tom Danley is responsible for the volcano effects at the Mirage in Las Vegas and built the worlds largest subwoofer, The Matterhorn, with 40,000 watts of energy. Your innards jigggle during extreme special effects. High frequencies are spacious and superbly clean. Fabian 8’s theatre 5 may currently be the best sounding cinema space in the NY metro area.

Fabian 8 Cinema website (www.fabian8.com) has posted that the theatre will finally be opening in January, 2010 after construction delays. They will be interviewing for staff positions on December 16 and 17.
The theatre is on the third floor of the new Center City Paterson building —– along with Space Port (family entertainment), Commerce Foods buffet, other restaurants and a very visible police substation. There are two floors of underground parking free for moviegoers. The entrance looks like an old fashioned brick front facade with a tile roof and neon blade sign. The marquee has a neon clock and large LED reader boards. On either side there is a video poster case. All 8 houses have wall-to-wall screens, 48' deep stadium risers and high back rockers with fold-up armrests. Technical:
Theatre 1 – 225 seats, Christie Digital, RealD, bi-amped front end.
Theatre 2 – 100 seats, 35mm, Dolby SR
Theatre 3 – 100 seats, 35mm, DTS
Theatre 4 – 100 seats, 35mm, DTS

Fabian 8 will use self-service ticketing kiosks and Movietickets.com for on line sales. There is a large event room for parties and meetings and a 120 foot long outdoor terrace. Box office telephone is (973) 754-1111.
They are using Klipsch front ends except for one digital house. “Theatre five is going to be a sound playroom for Danley. These guys are supposed to have done installs like Disney World, Volcano at The Mirage, Cirque du Soleil and Imaxes, but Paterson will not be Imax,” according to the guy I talked with. The entrance from the mall is supposed to look like an old time theatre with neon from the old Fabian. Sounds ambitious. I’ll believe it when I see (and hear) it.
I was there recently and got to talk with a guy who knew a lot about the project. I have worked in booths before and my impression is that they must be very serious cinema people. Here are some details I picked up… A push is on to open the new cinema during summer 2009. Walls (double with 5-ply sheet rock)and ceilings are going in now. There must have been at least 20 carpenters and drywall guys crawling all over the place. All houses are supposed to have 24" wide rockers on deep stadium risers. They are shooting for THX specs. Sight lines and viewing angles seem to conform to THX and it looks like baffle walls are going behind the screens.
Two Christie digitals are going in (I didn’t ask who’s 3D). Bi-amped front ends.
