News About This Theater

The Cinema I & II was opened August 5, 1969 with Barbra Streisand in “Funny Girl” in Screen I and Jack Lemmon in “April Fools” in Screen II. This theatre was on Lake George Road (Route 9) near a go-cart track, game facility and just down the road from a drive-in. It was a cheaply constructed building wherein you could hear the rain on the metal roof in a heavy storm (I seem to recall that part of the original was Quonset style). It added a third screen June 20 1975. Renamed Route 9 Cinemas on February 2, 1979. On June 29, 1979 it expanded to five screens.

Cinema Centers also ran a triple screen in Aviation Mall (about 5 miles south on Route 9) that was raised for the current Aviation Mall 7, run by Regal.

Cinema Centers was purchased by Hoyts US in about 1985. It was closed in 2004.

Does anyone have a picture of this theatre? It was on the west side of Route 9 not far from the Glen DI. Six Flags Great Escape is just north by a mile or two.

I guess this theater didn’t last as long as its bigger competitor.

I think this cinema might have been Hotys only cinema outside of Australia and New Zealand?

Hoyts had an entire chain in the US, predominant in New England. Was sold to Regal Cinemas in early 2000’s.

Saw “Jaws” here, summer 1975 with my favorite grandmother. Scared the heck out of her ! Early on there was confusion on this site for this theater— glad it got straightened out. Loved the pic posted even though it’s blurry and “microfilmed”. Not the most attractive theater. In summer 1976 I saw “Gumball Rally” and “St. Ives”. I think the Aviation Mall theaters put this out of business.
