Houston, Texas saw a beautiful new addition to the Loews Theater chain when the Loews Memorial City Mall 8 Cinemas opened on September 29, 1989. The four million dollar, Memorial City Mall 8 Cinemas featured great seats, marble floors, track lighting down the aisles and curtain walls in all theatres with a large four-sided concession stand. The lobby welcomed the moviegoer to high-ceilinged tiles. It was closed by Loews Cineplex on February 28, 2001.

Other movies I’ve seen at this theater include: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1993 re-release. At least I think), The Lion King (At least I believe I saw it at this theater), The Pagemaster, The Brady Bunch Movie, Batman Forever (with my Cousins), The Indian in the Cupboard, The Hunchback of Notre Dame (As part of a friend’s birthday), Alaska (Don’t Ask!), Snow Day (For my 11th birthday) and Dinosaur (2000) (As part of a summer school field trip. This was also the last movie I saw at this theater prior to its closing).
I also saw at this theater, The Road to El Dorado, as part of another friend’s birthday.

I was a projectionist at the AMC Town and Country 10 that was across the street from this theatre, and the times I had to go pick up a print at their theatre I was overwhelmed by how enormous their booth was. It was one giant room upstairs lined with Cinemeccanica vic5s and vic8s. Christie lamphouses and Christie platters. Sound systems were a mix of Dolby CP200 units in the larger houses, and Smart Stereo in the medium and smaller houses. The Dolby units were upgraded to SR in 1988. I remember being blown away by their setup compared to the 5 tiny cramped booths we had at AMC (although I liked our Century heads much better because I thought the film-path of the Italian-made Cinemeccanica projectors was way more difficult than the Century heads we had).
Loews even installed an Interfilm Technologies laserdisc “choose your own adventure” system here with buttons at all the seats so at certain points during a movie (lol only 2 were ever released for the format) the audience could vote on what happened next.
Loews spared no expense at this theatre making it as posh of an experience as possible for the time.

Loews Cineplex declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy on February 15, 2001. It would vanquish 56 theaters nationwide. Loews Memorial City 8 was one of those venues as Loews moved on following the February 28, 2001 showtimes. Three other area venues also shuttered in the reorganization.
