The original Capitol Theatre opened in 1939. It was gutted by fire in 1965, at that time it was owned by B&L Theatres. (It has its own page on Cinema Treasures)
The theatre was rebuilt and reopened in 1967. It is a single screen theatre seating 540 and was operated by Empire Theatres showing first run attractions. In October 2013 it was taken over by Cineplex Entertainment. It was closed on March 16, 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Antigonish, even with a university population, is just way too small to sustain a theatre now. Heading to New Glasgow makes more sense.
First known as the Capitol Theatre, named after the older Capitol.

Last operated by Cineplex Entertainment. As of 2026, it was still abandoned, even the theater chain’s logo was still visible but mirrored.
