Redwood Drive-In

In 1961, Syufy Enterprises Circuit built the Whipple Drive-In at E. Bayshore Road and Whipple Avenue. It opened on June 14, 1961 with Yul Brynner in “The Magnificent Seven”, Deborah Kerr in “The Sundowners” & Walt Disney’s feature documentary “Jungle Cat” The name would later be changed to the Redwood Drive-In and would add three screens. With a 25-year lifecycle, the drive-in was closed on September 13, 1987 and was demolished later in 1987.

On the site was built Syufy’s 12-plex, the Century Park 12 Cinema which opened in 1989 and closed roughly 20 years later by Cinemark (it has its own page on Cinema Treasures).

This drive in was my favorite! Before I could drive I would make my mom take me and as I got older it was a fun hangout for me and my friends and my Convertible VW Beetle!

Unlike most multi-screen drive-ins, all four screens closed on separate dates. The first screen closed on March 31, 1987, while the second screen closed on August 2, 1987. The third screen closed on September 3, 1987, and the final screen closed on September 13, 1987.

On its final day of operation, “Born In East L.A.” and “Hamburger Hill” were screened on the last remaining operating screen.
