The Cressona Mall opened theatreless in 1974. But when W.T. Grant declared bankruptcy in 1976, the Grant City anchor left room for new tenants. The Cressona Mall got a diminutive theatre when Cinema 61 opened as a 250-seat venue at the Mall. The Cinema 61 launched August 13, 1976 with Robert Shaw in “Swashbuckler”. A second 250-seat screen was added on September 1, 1978. The family-run cinema’s company was dissolved in 1978 and it was sold to Dick Fox and was closed in 1988. It became a Blockbuster video store and and is now a gymnasum.

This was my family’s movie theater, It opened with one theater then it added another 250 seat theater to be a twin theater. My father died on Oct. 1st 1978 (49 years old) of a heart attack and we still ran the theater after his passing until 1979 when my mother sold it to Dick Fox of Fox Theaters, It was still a theater until the mid to late 1980’s when it was closed. The spot was a Blockbuster video store for some years, Now its a Planet Fitness.
This opened on August 13th, 1976 and the 2nd cinema opened on September 1st, 1978. Closed in 1988. It became a fox theatre in 1980. Grand opening ads posted.
