Struggling Md. movie theater gets no bidders

HAGERSTOWN, MD — Even after being put up for sale, there is little interest for the Hagerstown 10.

A struggling 10-screen movie theater near Hagerstown has found no bidders at an auction.

Kenny Ridenour, whose family owns the Hagerstown Cinema 10, said he was surprised at the lack of interest in the 39-year-old property.

    Theater on auction block Saturday

MILACA, MN — With few other options, the owners of the Milaca Theatre put it up for sale this weekend.

The Milaca Theatre is available once again via an auction that will be held Saturday, March 14 at 10 a.m.

Its current owners, Cathy and John Summers would like to continue owning it, but a job relocation moved them to St. Louis, Mo.

Cathy’s sisters (Cindy Ames and Kelly Johnson) have been managing it on their behalf, but both live in St. Cloud, making it difficult to maintain. And Ames is moving, which added to the decision to sell.

US 23 Twin DI put up for sale

FLINT, MI — After the recent death of Lou Warrington Jr., his son Lou Warrington III has put the US 23 Twin Drive-in Theatre up for sale. There are “For Sale by Owner” signs with a hand-written phone number posted underneath the drive-in’s landmark neon marquee. As previously reported, the drive-in will reopen this year for the final time under Warrington family ownership.

Further info can be found in the Flint Journal which does indicate that if there is no buyer by the end of the season, the drive-in will sit vacant. Warrington is asking for between $5 million to $8 million for the 30+ acre property. The story also mentions one potential buyer who wants to keep it as a drive-in theater.

The “23” for the first time ever, has no local competition because the crosstown rival Miracle Twin DI in Burton is not reopening. So it is expected to get the big movies, which the Miracle Twin had previously gotten most of in previously seasons, this summer.

Marcus Loew bronze plaque for sale

I’ve acquired one of those 144+ bronze plaques with a brass relief bust of Marcus Loew. These plaques were mounted in the lobbies of most, if not all, Loews movie palaces. The plaque was designed by sculptor Louis Keila and produced in 1924. One of these is in the collection of the Jewish Museum in New York, and has been catalogued by the Smithsonian Institute.

Anyone wishing more information, including a digital image, is invited to contact me offline.

I am also wondering how many of these plaques still exist in what were the Loews theaters.
