It’s nice to round up the price because it does make it easier and faster but you should still have small change. Don’t they even have small change it the petty cash?
I worked for General Cinema and we also rounded prices up but we still had some smaller change on hand. We used armored car so we didn’t deposit loose change because the bank charged more if we did. We would wait until we had a few rolls of change to deposit it and only get charged once.
I’ve been to about a dozen Kerasotes and poor quality is normal at all of them. One of the theatres had shadows on the screen every show. It was fixed on the rare case they had a projectionist who knew how to fix it and would tell them the secret. It wasn’t actually a secret but any ave. projectionist with and IQ could figure it out.
They have another theatre they built that you don’t what to use the mens restroom in. The put the sink and urinals so someone could be going to the bathroom on you while your washing your hands. They also had to buy some extra buckets for rain because of all the leaks in the roof including over the projectors. Another proplem was when it rained it washed the mud across the street because they didn’t excavate right. The owners of the codo across the street were less than happy.
There was a small company that Kerasotes offered to buy that the owners told Kerasotes what they can do with it. Less than a week later one of the theatres burned to the ground and they sold the other theatres to Kerasotes and got out of town.
In 1992 the seats in all theatres ( both locations ) were to be replaced. It got cut back to cinema 1 & 3 at the quad ( 1-4 ) and cinema 7 at the triple ( 5-7 ). The reason was that Coldwater Crossing 8 in Ft. Wayne was opening and they got pulled for them. They did finish the job late Sept or early Oct ‘93 along with Laf. Sq. When they finished the seats they did Greenwood and Laf. Sq. at the same time.
This was properly run when it was General Cinema. They were always able to get the movie on the screen and always start on time.
When Kerasotes took over the union contacted them to see about staying on and were told to go to hell so they picked the theatres in town along with others sold at the same time and a few others. When the union left on the last night they tore down all the films and disconnected the sound systems.
The first weekend under Kerasotes they only had one new movie and still had 3 Men and a Baby which had been there 4 months already and still selling out. The night Kerasotes took over the DM and VP said that there would never be projection problems at College Mall because the manager was the best projectionist in the company.
The first day the manager spend the entire day tring to get the movies running and most of the day she had the upside down and couldn’t figure out what was wrong. The first weekend they broke at least one film every set of shows and managed to break every show of the only new film for over a week.
It was so bad that they had to bring the manager of the Von Lee over to run the booth because Sandy was breaking so many film. Everyone in Bloomington learned not to go to Kerasotes College Mall 1-4 when John Fleener was off.
Kerasotes had a habit of not paying employees until the checks were at least a week late.
General Cinema was a good place to go to a movie and they knew what they were doing, unlike some companies in the biz. They had a good business plan, build cheap and you only need 2 or 3 different designs depending if it’s a mall location or stand along and would need many changes from one to another.
The seats are another thing. The company that made thewm went out of business in 1966 and General Cinema was still putting them in new theatres as late as 1983.GC bought the entire inventory of seats when they went out of business and put the in a warehouse. I don’t think anyone ever liked those seats.
I only worked at 2 theatres that never had the red and white GC seats and one was a newer theatre or about 9 years old with the new irvin seats. Oneof the projectionist that was there was Dick and he had one of the store rooms in the booth turned into his kitchen. It was called Dick’s Deli. He had for for a week or more because the projectionist weren’t allowed to leave the theatre until the shift was over so they brought or made their lunches. Sometimes they would have an employee pick up something for them.
Thisd theatre had nice size storage behind the screens. Cinema 6 had 2 store rooms one on each side and theatres 4 & 5 had one each which was all one before it was split. Although cinema 4 & 5 sort of had 2 because it had one small of that had a door to the other behind the screen. Cinema 6 sort of had 2 oine the left side but only had behind screen area past the storage.
Your right about the IRS getting their share but it would have been nice if the state had wanted to enforce the law and nail them for their crimes. They also were banned from any General Cinema but for only 5 years. They also paid the IRS a bit more because they have to pay fines, late fees, and penalties, of course it is only based on the amount the admitted to. You know it had to be a lot more than they admitted to.
It may have been one of the most profitable twins in the country through the ‘90’s but I know that Southtown in Bloomington,Mn would blow it out of the water. Southtowqn only had 2 years in it’s history it didn’t make money and one was the last year open but it was suppose to lose money then. The mall did everything they could to get the theatre out but the people of Bloomington fought to try to keep it.
When GC upgraded the seats it was a major inprovemewnt over what they had. I helped with the seats in ‘91 & '92 and with the new seat they probably didn’t have 300 in each theatre.

Considering the size of AMC and Loews is hard to believe they only have to get rid of 10 theatres. I know there are a lot of theatres from both that are in compition of each other. This would also include all the theatres they got from General Cinema. I know that AMC isn’t the only one to get away with buying out the compition and not being require to have compition as antitrust laws state.
There was a post about Sony selling Loews but Sony always owned Loews. It had started as Loews but then they changed the name to Sony but changed it back to Loews only a couple years later.

The reason for this was that GC and Fox had a feud and only Mall of America and Ford City in Chicago were allowed to show Fox movies. It didn’t stop there, no Fox one sheets were allowed. It lasted a few years but GC let up and started allowing trailers and one sheets.
I went there the other day and it was nice to go in the theatre and no get stuck to the floor which always happened when it was Kerasotes. The only complaint I have about the theatre, which was the one at the end of the hall, is the aisle. You can trip on it if you come in when the lights are down but that is how it was down when the theatre was split.
It was a nice change from Kerasotes. When I got my ticket the cashier was nice and friendly even for someone that came in for a shoe that didn’t show until later. She was fast and helpfull.
The concessions were good as well. The popcorn was actually fresh something you don’t get at Kerasotes.
I didn’t go in the restroom but the rest of the theatre was clean.If they keep doing things like they are it will stay around.

General Cinema had some nice theatres as well. When the started building a bunch of megaplexes some of those were nice. The Southtown in Bloomington,Mn. was a nice one they got from Mann.

This is a very poor theatre. The popcorn tastes like it is at least a year old, very dirty, and very poorly run. I don’t think they have ever got the movie focused on the screen. The sound is usually just as bad as the film poor quality. I don’t think they have ever cleaned the floors not to mention the theatre. I have been in there during first show and just about stuck to the floors.
The price are very out of range. The concession prices are high all the concessions are poor quality.
My uncle even went there before and didn’t get to see the end of the movie because the film broke and they didn’t know how to fix it.

The managers did make good money off conc. sales but not asst. managers. The only theatre in the area that came close in sales was Har Mar which is also where the first manager of Mall of America came from.
The managers lost the commission when General Cinema switched the bonus program to one like they had at AMC after they brought in a new vp that came from AMC IN 1995 and in ‘96 changed the bonus program. The new one had a goal that had to be made before a bonus was paid out and in the case of MOA the managers could have made more at some of the other theaters because the goals were set so high they could reach them and the theater had never done that much in its histroy.
The Mall Of America 14 might not even be in the top 25 theaters anymore with the addition of theaters built by General Cinema such as Northbrook 14, Randhurst16, and Yorktown 18 in Chicago, Framingham14 in Boston, Mayfair Mall 18 in Milwaukee, Franklin Mill 14, Phil. and Cliffton Commons 16 in New Jersey to name a few.
It probably stayed near the top until AMC took over General Cinema but with all the 20 and 30 plexes AMC has and the addition of Southdale 16, Arbor Lakes 16, and Eden Praire 18. They have now added Roseville 14 which could also bump them down.
This theatre was designed after one in Bloomington,Mn. also called Southtown. It was actually built by Mann in 1964 but bought by General Cinema in 1970. It was a single with 1260 seats then in 1980 in was twined leaving 540 seats in each. Later removed 2 seats in each for handicapp. It had a waterfountain in it when it opened but had to be removed after years has not being maintained. The theatre was closed Sept. 17, 1995.
The Bloomington Southtown is listed on cinema treasures but not under General Cinema. It is only list under Mann Southtown.
I can’t believe they were still using reel to reel on this theater. It wasn’t uncommon for General Cinema’s union to run all of the theaters by themself. All GC had union until late'95 when the smaller units had the managers start running the booth part of the time after they brought in a former vp from AMC. At the Mall of America 14 they had 1 projectionist run both sides rather than one on each side.

When it was General Cinema in the early ‘90’s it was the distric office for the Chicago, Northern In. and Mpls/St.Paul areas. The only part of Indiana not in the distric for a while was Indy which was part of the New York/ New Jersey district. Chicago was also the regional office until they shut them down and transfered the duties to distric managers. I think the regional office was at Woodrrove but I’m not sure.
The single theatre had a stage in the front and after the screen was split part of it was still theater 1 or the south one. The main difference in the theaters was when they put the wall down the middle and of course removed the seats to make room for the wall.They had to reposition some of the seats. The doors were in the same locations and no extra doors were added.
The Har Mar 3 was built by Mann in 1970 but never run by them and the design was along that of Southtown. The Har Mar was opened as a twin and later split one screen. Har Mar had been run by General Cinema and later AMC and just closed by AMC on Dec.7, 2006.

The back theaters had a store room at the end of the row of theaters on the right that was just a big store room but at the end of that was another room with the incenarater. I have a few Har Mar pics if you want them give me your e mail. I have a couple that show the chandeliers including one with the light off.
I also noticed that AMC threw all the seats in the dumpsters rather than selling them. It looks like they are determined to make sure no one gets them.
There have always been mice at Har Mar 11. It was usually worse in the back 8. One of the main reasons is it didn’t get cleaned right. The back theaters had a store room at the end of the row of theaters on the right that was just a big store room but at the end of that was another room with the incenarater. It was a mess back there most of the time.
There was a time when just the daily cleaning was poor. They didn’t even clean the equipment at the conc stand correctly if at all. I heard that as bad as it was that it got even worse after AMC took over.
