At the Men in Black premiere, they had press and GA in the regular auditorium (with masking) and the stars from the film in the Dolby with a scope floating screen. Since MiB: International is flat, the cast saw their film pillarboxed here. Just amazing to have a premiere screening of this magnitude with the stars be pillarboxed. Hopefully they didn’t have mice run under their seats as well, as I read a Google Review with that happening in the Dolby here. One misses the Zigfield for these things.
@klstra Right now there is no Laser projection here. You saw standard xenon projection and it sounds like there was something off with the bulb there. Or maybe they left the 3D polarizer on. Might be worth messaging AMC about it on twitter or facebook. This issue of dimness shouldn’t happen with laser projection, as the colors become much more vivid there.
If this NYU rumor is true then it would be a bit awkward for AMC since they are spending so much money on renovations here.
Some update from talking to a manager here: Construction on the IMAX is currently halted because the crew lacked proper city permission. That’ll probably delay the construction a bit, so it might not be August after all. They did however rip out the seats and do some fixing on the stadium seating already. I added some pictures of the current state. Original screen is still in place, so no work done on that yet.
It’s unclear whether it’ll remain scope or not, I heard conflicting things on that. They may want to try to expand it
Also: the reason Kips Bay won’t receive a Dolby is apparently due to their projection booths being to small for both projectors and ventilation units, which Dolby standards require to be together in the same place. However, AMC plans to put in an AMC prime auditorium here that will also be Laser.
So in around a year we might very well have two Laser auditoriums here: one IMAX and one Prime.

I agree, it didn’t do it justice at all. Laser is also a form of digital projection though, just much better and capable than the xenon one which really wasn’t designed for giant screens. But – laser is here to stay now!
I don’t think Fandango knows how to defferantiate between standard IMAX xenon and IMAX with Laser. Same thing with AMC Empire 25, which also has an IMAX with Laser.
But you can be assured this is an IMAX with Laser theater.
Marathon is in a standard 2D theater. Talked to some people there. Some are taking breaks and pretty much are sleeping through films (it’s almost 60 hours after all). The theater gave them toothbrushes and blankets as well as tissues (for Endgame I assume).
It’s a bit ironic because the press screenings for Endgame are literally next door.
Some people traveled from different states and cities as this is one of few full MCU marathons in the country. I think Alamo Drafthouse in Brooklyn is the only other in NYC doing it, and that has significantly fewer seats.
The marathon ended up sold out with almost 400 seats in the auditorium at $125 a ticket. Those fans are ambitious, they really are.

Resolution-wise the RPX theater (#12) is 4K capable, the rest I deduce are all 2K. Auditoriums 5, 6, 10 and 12 are 3D capable as well.
The screens are all flat 1.85:1 aspect ratio. I find that super, super dumb. They’re all floating screens, so they don’t have any masking. Literally any scope movie at this theater will be letterboxed. It’s Landmark 57 all over again. 🤦♂️
Why couldn’t these geniuses put in scope floating screens with the same width? Most Hollywood movies are scope, not flat. A vast majority of moviegoers will have to deal with letterboxing here. I just don’t get it. This was completely avoidable. But what do I know, maybe people like seeing letterboxed movies.

There were so many families with kids there last Sunday, it was really surprising. I personally wouldn’t pay 17 bucks for a standard movie ticket even just for myself, which is why I used my RCC points. But it turns out a lot of people are fine with shelling out 50-100 dollars for an afternoon at the movies with their family. I don’t know how or why but apparently they are.
Battery Park for instance also doesn’t have matinee pricing and that location has been doing well at a very similar price ($17). Granted it’s near Wall Street, but I don’t think only people from the financial industry go there.
It’s just that, as I mentioned, the demand is there. The crowds are there, the location works (foot traffic + transportation nearby), the community doesn’t really have many alternatives etc.
So many will go and they will pay. To be honest, I think they could be charging 30 dollars and people would still flock there. I see good crowds at the 4DX at E-Walk too where tickets are 26-30 dollars. People just don’t seem to care. They keep on going and they keep on paying.

They have a greeter and someone who just goes over each poster box with a towel. I assume they’ll cut those positions down once they’ll need more help at concession and box office and stop caring about making a good impression, which I guess will be in a few weeks or months.

I don’t think so since the Landmark Sunshine never really played blockbusters or other mainstream first-run Hollywood films. This Regal seems to only be showing those.
The way I understand it the Sunshine shut down not because Landmark wanted to close it but because the owners of that building sold it.

You’re right about the seat count. E-Walk for instance has auditoriums with over 200 seats. The largest here is the RPX with 144. But that’s pretty much in line with other theaters with recliners. Kips Bay for instance has auditoriums with only 43 seats, so against that it’s still very good.
@mhvbear did you use the seat counts from the Regal site? I did that at first and it wouldn’t show me unavailable seats. Fandango however does, so I went back and counted over there. That’s probably also where you made the mistake. Regal’s website had a weird redesign for some reason.

IMAX said people prefer 2D shows in the United States. Over 80% of U.S. moviegoers watch movies in 2D instead of 3D. They’ll still do 3D for James Cameron films or others where the studio would like that, but for most they plan to prioritize 2D.

Yes AMC offers unlimited refills for their Freestyle machines IF it’s a large fountain drink. So small or regular drinks aren’t eligible for those refills. At least that’s what AMC customer service told me. The difference is literally pennies though between sizes.

Many locations have both Dolby and IMAX. (34th St for instance as well.)

Thanks for those pictures. The renovated concession stand looks really great. They seemed to even have replaced the carpet.

But there are 3D showtimes next week for Aquaman at nearby locations such as AMC 84th Street.
