Nice movie theatre in San Francisco CA needs someone to take over the lease . Rich area ready to make someone some money with some form of entertainment!
Sad news like so many movie theatres the Regal 9 Santa Cruz CA has closed for good. Lets hope some new movie theatre people can move in as Regal has pulled the plug after being closed almost a year! This is a college tourist town so some new circuit will do well when they re open If it remains a movie theatre. Regal in my opinion wrecked the seating a few years ago by putting in huge recliners and taking away too many seats. There are 3 large type spaces inside this now closed downtown Santa Cruz CA Theatre just ripe for a first for Santa Cruz IMAX, Screen X, 4DX or a large curved screen plus food service. The other 6 auditoriums are very small but good for art type movies. The only other cinema in town is run by Landmark the DelMar 3 and The Nick Theatres they play mainly art type fare and are temp closed. Time for Alamo, Maya or CineLux Theatres to take over this prime spot, a great location downtown when movies can open again soon! Please change from open to closed. The front marquee was blown off last year during a wind storm so whoever takes over this former cinema they will have to replace as Regal did nothing about It.
Rumor is in the neighborhood is that It may become a new sports gym like they did the Blumenfeld Alhambra Theatre on Polk St in SF now a fancy gym or the UA Metro Theatre on Union ST another expensive gym built inside a former movie theatre. They kept the neon marquee up outside at both of these former SF movie cinemas. The West Portal area that the Empire Theatre has been for many years has no nice large sports gym and is in a good money area. We hope It still remains a movie theatre in some way!
Lets hope they don’t bulldoze the Empire for more SF condos! May be time for the Vouge/Balboa Theatre group to get involved and save It. Take out the dumpy small twin loge theatres and make the place one large event/movie event space!
Nice that they re opened but please such small square flat screens and very little seats. Probably no masking. It should just have been a 2 or 3 plex with larger curved screens and way more seats. All about food and drinks plus over large sleep chairs. I wonder If someone will take over the old Bay Theatre in town if It’s still around and bring in more seats and a larger screen. The movie people in this town have a ton of money to spend on a nice wide screen movie house not some cramped small five screen set up. The new neon sign does look nice.
How nice at fist when I saw this photo I thought they were tearing down the place. It will be nice when they re build the candy stand and projection booth. You very seldom see this at a old Drive In!
A sad day for Hollywood CA. The former Warner Hollywood Cinerama just sits empty year after year. The owners are not doing anything about re opening this former deluxe roadshow theatre. The city needs to step in and do something about this cinema blight!
The Tower Theatre Fresno CA is about to be sold to a church group. The Tower area will suffer as the former cinema and entertainment venue brought in many music events and film festivals. Lets hope they don’t put white paint all over the inside that many churches do when they move into a former movie theater. You can forget the great neon Tower marquee being flashing for any church service two days a week. The church gang say they will still rent out the auditorium but I think they will be picky on what groups they rent to. You won’t find many of the festivals or music/comedy events they did book in the past. The screen inside that has been up the last few years is just small little video set up, they put black masking on the sides. Not a good place these days to see a movie on DCP video. Some people have bigger screens in their homes. I don’t think they have 35mm projectors left in the booth? A sad day for Fresno movie/entertainment lovers!
Thanks Johnny for the classic ads. Must have been a rough projectionist shift with all the film reels to change every 20 minutes for the Dusk To Dawn Show. I don’t think they had the 35mm platter system then.
I wonder If it is closed from C19 or the theatre has closed for good ?Time for Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas to take over when It is safe and provide Boise with the things the other cinemas don’t do!
Thanks Dallas the neon at this cinema looks great! I have a friend that lives nearby in Garden City will try to check it out someday. I guess It is run by UA now?
A wonderful mid size Oakland CA cinema that they very seldom ever played a 70mm film. Now torn out for a Kaiser hospital. I remember It was all decked out in red drapes and seats on the inside with waterfall curtains and had a flat big screen. As most theatres in the area were run by Fox West Coast Theatres® or Blumenfeld that had no 70mm projection this new ‘Theatre 70’ gave them some competition. Thanks 50’s for the 35mm trailer still.
Some of the best popcorn at this privately owned theatre by the sea in Capitola CA near Santa Cruz. Audrey the owner must have liked Coke® as she always had the syrup turned way up not like the local UA circuit that had the drinks set almost like just soda water. I think they had real butter for the popcorn also. When you visited Capitola Beach you could smell the fresh popcorn out the lobby door!
Thanks Dean Miss Audrey sat in this tiny boxoffice every night for years. Too bad they tore the Capitola Theatre down many years ago. The cinema had some of the worst sticky floors of any theatre in the Santa Cruz CA area. Such a great small movie theatre next to the beach with even a parking lot. Audrey is still probably collecting tickets up in the movie heavens with no fog! At least she poured a good mix soda at the lobby refreshment counter the Coke® was not weak very strong and the rugs showed It.
Such a nice Todd-AO curved screen at the Coronet Theatre in SF. UA Theatres got money hungry sold the land and tore down this great 70mm showcase just even after they did a new seat and sound remodel. Strange a 49 foot curved screen does not seem to big now but I remember as a kid going to see ‘Oklahoma’ in Todd-AO for the first time with 6 track mag stereo It was something to remember at the long gone Coronet Theatre. They put all the surround speakers up in the roof ceiling not the side walls like most cinemas. Made for a great hidden surround effect. By the time they tore her down the place was full of mold. A sad day how UA Theatres treats their former deluxe roadshow theatres when they need $$$$$$.
All closed up since March this would have been a good time to do some remodel work like a new stereo speaker system, deco look rugs, new curtains ect and install the long delayed electric/pipe organ but I bet nothing has gone on inside the boarded up plywood of the Castro Theatre in SF.
Great color lights add so much. The only thing missing is some nice waterfall curtains! They needed to hide the surround speakers behind he color panels.

Thanks CC must have ben just before CinemaScope® opened at the Roxy!
Does anyone have photos of the HARVEYSCOPE curved screen? Was It a Cinerama® type set up and I wonder If they showed Its A Mad in 70mm here.

No mention of 70mm in the ad? I know they did a 35mm scope stereo blow up for this film to 70mm in many markets. Thanks Grind for the clip ad.

Thanks Dallas must have looked so nice to see the large curved D-150 screen at this cinema.

This was the old AMAZON Theatre on Geneva in SF, still up but turned into condos with a drug store on bottom level.

Great lighting photo Kino. You won’t find any USA cinemas with this class lighting! I wonder If they can change the colors?
