When my wife and I were first married, we lived in Kalamazoo for a while. I saw two movies at the State. We went one night and seen what has become one of my favorite movies, Jeremiah Johnson with Robert Redford. The next time we went to the State, My wife brought it to my attention that there was another Robert Redford movie playing there and ask if I would like to go. I asked what the movie was about and she said “ahhh, it’s just like that Jeremiah Johnson movie.” It was “The Way We Were!” I was tricked into seeing that one!

Wish I could remember more about the State. I remember going there as a kid and getting in for $.85. It wasn’t as nice on the inside as the Palace Theater, located a few short blocks from there. The State Theater sat one half block off Broadway. We use to go to the movies and afterward eat at the Kopper Kettle, Just down from the theater. The last time I saw the building, before the demo., the doors were off and it was full of garbage. How sad! I think I saw The Hunchback of Notre Dame, starring Anthony Quinn at this theater, about 1960.

There was a Jerry Lewis Theater in Portage, Indiana. It was later converted to a Concert-style Night club. The building is still there and being used for something, but I haven’t been passed there in quite a while.

after restoration, the State was a great movie experience. Took the family to see Independence Day . Beautiful restoration. Hope they re-open as a classic movie theater. Like to see some of my old favorites on the big screen. Bogart, John Wayne, Hitchcock Jim Stewart and so on.

Of all the theaters, I think I miss the Palace the Most. This was my introduction to the BIG SCREEN. I remember going to see the Three Stooges. Nothing like the Stooges on the silver screen! Then there was Ben Hur and some of the epics of that time. Jerry Lewis Movies at the Palace! How about “House on Haunted Hill?” Sadly, the last movie we saw at the Palace was “Bonnie and Clyde” and there was more crime going on in the seats than in the movie. We were robbed for our bus money. Never went back.

One comment about Indiana Drive-ins. There was the Dunes Drive-in in Lake Station (East Gary) Indiana. Saw the Shining there. Got a great teenage story that happened at the Dunes: A car-load of us guys went to the movies and as a car-load of guys often did, we were misbehaving. Someone at the concession stand called the Lake Station Police on us. We know this because a friend ran back to our car and tipped us off. We saw the Police car pull up at the concesion stand and then take off like a bullet for our car, but a funny thing happened on the way. He smacked right into a speaker pole going about 30mph. across the parking lot. He never made it to our car. OOPS!

I love the Movies, however I have a bit of trouble with the Drive in Concept. Not the theater’s fault, it’s just that the last time My wife and I went to the Y&W, we fell asleep. When we woke up, we were the only car in the parking lot. I use to get too comfortable in the Drive ins. Could have been those darned reclining seats! I did enjoy the Banko. Loved to listen to the guy read off the numbers. Kind of quirkie, but entertaining. Made good memories for me.

The Marquette Theater is now closed. Karasotas has recently built a new “Showplace” Cinema. This Theater and another theater in Michigan City Closed their doors shortly after. My Wife and I saw the Exorcist in this theater. Scared the ba-Jesus out of us! Down-town Michigan City had the Lido. Theater. It was an “oldie” Saw American Graffiti there.

I have fond memories of the Glen. On the “Big Screen” I saw Mad,Mad,Mad, Mad World One of the greatest comedys ever filmed, in my opinion. Thanks Glen Theater!

I worked in Hammond back in the 1970’s. I remember when Aerosmith played at this theater. Hammond was a busting town at that time.
