The fire occured in the late 80’s/early 90’s in the cheap johns discount store and spread to damage the theatre. I dont beleive that it sustained fire damage, but major smoke and water damage.
This theatre is really a great experience for the viewing. The picture and audio are always excellent. The popcorn is great and the soda always ice cold! $4.00 matinees and $7.00 tickets all other times…..The outside is so-so, they have been doing some work inside…all and all a great movie house!
The theatre is closed, but the building is still standing and is presently a marine supply store.
I saw only one movie in this theatre….while I honestly cannot remember that the movie was, I fell in love with the design and architecture of the inside. It was a beautiful arch, natural wood.
I too worked at Ten Mile River and never did get into the theatre, despite everytime i wanted to the schedule didnt match the hectic schedule of a busy Camp Program Director… :)
I worked at this theatre from 2001-2003, the actual Theatre count is 17 now since there was always plans for 17, but Loews could not get the Town to approve the extra theatres. Finally in late 2002, there were 2 very small theatres added to the count, they are located on the right wing of the theatre at the end of the wing.
I worked in Shore 8 – Cineplex Odeon in 2003 after spending 2 years prior at the Stony Brook 15. This theatre has some of the best Sound on Long Island. The Shore 8 is actually owned by Loews Cineplex. Its a nice theatre, huge lobby with a great game area for the kids. There is an elevator and a pair of escalators as well. There was an outside walk up box office until about March 2003, when a local drunk “remodeled” the front and the box office was relocated inside to the left of the concession stand.
This is one of my favorite theatres around! I see at least 4 – 5 movies a month at this theatre. Its got great sound and picture. They have removed most of the maritime displays and there has been a nice amount of work done on the lobby. Its a great deal to see a general admission for $7.00. Let’s hope this theatre will be around for a long time!!
There is rumors that this theatre is going to be closed and demolished in the next 6 months to make way for the new Cinema de Lux that National Amusements plans to build in it’s parking lot
