LOS ANGELES, CA — 70/70: A Series Of 70mm Films Celebrating Laemmle’s 70th Anniversary
In celebration of its 70th anniversary, Laemmle Theatres is pleased to present 70/70: A Series of 70mm Films Celebrating Laemmle’s 70th Anniversary. All screenings will take place at the Royal Theatre in West Los Angeles and benefit various local charities. Filmmaker James Cameron, Actor Bill Paxton and others will participate in Q&A’s after the screenings of their films on Saturday, December 20th.

This is how films SHOULD be presented. This is totally cool. I wish this could come to New York City area.
I wholeheartedly agree, movie534. How I wish this could come to the Boston area, and also include such great, golden oldie-but-goody classics such as West Side Story, Dr. Zhivago, Lawrence of Arabia and many others.
Where are they going to get decent 70MM prints of some of these pictures. Are they striking new prints?
I understood that there were no runable 70MM prints at all of Titantic and that all the ones for Raiders were either badly faded or trashed.
Aww man, I wish this could come to the Chicago area. I know this will be a feast for the eyes.
Some of the prints might be Studio prints not the regular whats left over depot prints.

I know that there are new 70mm prints of West Side Story and Lawrence of Arabia.
Fairly recently, West Side Story played at San Francisco’s Castro Theatre on a least a couple of occasions.
Lawrence of Arabia’s played in a number of places, too, recent.y
I wish I were in Los Angeles instead of Springfield, Missouri. You know, I’d pay to watch every single one of them if I were there.
I wish they’d come to the Boston area somewhere. I’d pay to watch afew of them that sound really appealing.

The Coolidge in the Boston are has run some nice 70mm features as you are probably aware, and I feel lucky to live in a metro are that still has at least one theater with 70mm capability. But like many of you, I would love to see these screenings.
I would also love to be there to see some pristine 70mm prints and have a chance to laugh in James Cameron’s face should he suggest, as he has done many times, that digital filming and presentation is better than film. How anyone who has seen a proper 70mm presentation could say that and call themselves a motion picture professional is beyond me.
Good points, Ian M. Judge. As a person who goes to the Coolidge quite a bit and holds a yearly membership there, I’m fully aware of that. it’s dlear that digital cinema definitely has its problems, as many other posts here on this site suggest.
I only wish that the Coolidge would get more 70mm film features, but I guess that’s just me.
The Dec. 21st. showing of “Raiders of the Lost Ark” in 70MM has been replaced with “Top Gun”.
Where was the screening of “Raiders of the Lost Ark” in 70mm on December 21st scheduled to take place, William? Just curious. Also, “Top Gun” doesn’t sound like a movie that I want to see.

James Cameron, Bill Paxton, Bernard Fox, and Karen Zumsteg will not be able to attend any of the screenings on Sunday. However, I can confirm that director Joe Dante, star Zach Galligan, and actor William Schallert will all be in attendance for the 4 pm Sunday screening of Gremlins. Also, as mentioned above, Top Gun replaced Raiders of the Lost Ark on the schedule. Additionally, there will be a short selection of 70 mm trailers preceding the screening of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
Also, I want to respond to the comment above about there not being any decent 70 mm prints of Titanic. This is definitely false. We did a run-through of the print of Titanic that we will be screening, and it looks really good.
So did anyone make it to any of these screenings? How were the prints? How were the crowds? I’d love to hear a full report.
