The Hilltop Drive-In was located in North Augusta across the river from downtown.
It sat high upon a hill that overlooked downtown Augusta. Of all the drive-ins this one had the best scenic location right on the Savannah River.

It was owned by Holland-Boston Theatres, and would later be sold to Georgia Theatres. It was Augusta's second largest with 631 parking spaces. Being located by the 5th Street Bridge, as you were going up the hill there was a large neon sign sitting below the drive-in showing the way.

On April 27, 1963 it played "Goliath" with Steve Reeves. Also showing was a cartoon carnival and "Teenage Millionaire" with Jimmy Clanton. I saw the Vincent Price horror movie "Theatre of Blood" there, along with the second feature "For A Few Dollars More". I later took my girlfriend Karen Anderson to see "Star Wars" not that we watched much of the movie. I remember the one drawback watching a movie in summer were the killer mosquitos that ate us up.

The booth was carbon arc, same as the others. Chuck Dray pretty much handled the projection, and he would also fill in at the Imperial Theatre. He would also watch for people sneaking in the back exit. One night a bunch of ushers drove up and changed the marquee to a rather dirty title. Years later we told Dray about it - theatre pranks!

One item of note: Chuck Dray told me when the Hilltop Drive-In got a soft porn R like "Student Nurses" or "The Teacher", he would take the print to the Modjeska Theatre where he would run it and mark the spots where he'd have to clip out any nudity. There was some North Augusta law that wouldn't allow it, and the screen did face a busy highway. I take it that he edited the print back after showing it to restore what he had cut out.

The theatre closed in the late-1970s. I had a chance to visit afterwards. Georgia Theatres had taken an axe to the booth chopping up everything in sight. I have a picture of the booth/concession stand.

Great introduction, Mike. I was there in 1965-66 but remember nothing about it. If I had a mosquito problem there, it wasn't memorable. When I got to Leesville LA, I frequently attended a drive-in that was a total mosquito pit. Neither spraying nor closed windows helped.

THE OLD SWING SETS THAT HUNREDS OF AUGUSTA'S KIDS PLAYED ON ARE STILL UP. CHUCK DRAY TOOK THE SWINGS DOWN AND PUT THEM IN HIS YARD FOR HIS KIDS WHEN THE HILLTOP CLOSED. CHUCK HAS SINCE PASSSED ON BUT THAT WHITE SWING SET IS STILL UP. IT LASTED LONGER THAN THE DRIVE-IN.

June 3 1966 the DALEKS and RAIDERS are playing Sci-Fi,on the hill.

June 10 1972 now here is a triple feature you even find in Southern California. MIDNIGHT COWBOY,ALICE'S RESTAURANT, and THE CHRISTINE JOURGSEN STORY. Rated X,Rated R and Rated R. some booking for that side of the river.

Hilltop Drive in on July 2 1972 ELVIS in CLAMBAKE and KID GALAHAD.

BEDKNOBS AND BROOMSTICKS with the BAREFOOT EXECUTIVE would follow. BEDKNOBS AND BROOMSTICKS would have an impressive run at DANIEL VILLAGE for several weeks.

Following this horror double feature will be HANNIE CAULDER and A GUNFIGHT with Kirk DOUGLAS and JOHNNY CASH rated PG.

July 30 1972 Boy,this is ELVIS country,he is back with LIVE A LITTLE AND LOVE A LITTLE. second feature is GIRL HAPPY and the third movie is THAT'S THE WAY IT IS.

Coming next another strange double feature, WOODSTOCK and THE WILD BUNCH.{what?] both rated R.
posted by MikeRogers on Jan 15, 2010 at 4:28pm
"Woodstock" and "The Wild Bunch" is an odd double bill, all right. No doubt they were packaged for that drive-in engagement because they were both Warner films from the same period. On the other hand, combined they run five hours and 18 minutes. And with a late start the first week of August, plus an intermission between them and possibly one midway through "Woodstock" (three hours and four minutes) I'd be surprised if many cars were still there at about three in the morning.

As for "Midnight Cowboy" and "Alice's Restaurant," they played hundred of engagements together. They were both United Artists pictures from the same season. Once they were "played out" individually, UA sent them out as a package because they were perceived as sharing a bit of a counter-culture identity. That was true of "Alice's Restaurant," for sure; "Midnight Cowboy" had much greater mainstream appeal, but in this case it could be pressed into service for its underlying counter-culture appeal.

ED, you are not going to believe this but the guy that played the bus driver lives down the street from me. He,like me was a Stagehand, working MIDNIGHT COWBOY. The actor that was suppose to play that part got drunk the night before,so the next morning the Director puts him in the movie.
I asked him why he hasn't let one of TV or papers do a feature on him and he flat out said "No Way" .I don't know,I think it was because the film was X rated. Small World. I Knew the Projectionist at the Hilltop He probably dropped a reel or two on WOODSTOCK. Chuck could it until he started showing movies on platters.

JUNE 16 1974,bet Projectionist Chuck Dray had to preview these two movies to snip out any nudity before showing in North Augusta,S.C.
Now playing "THE TEACHER" and "THE STEPMOTHER" I often wondered if any one noticed the spice marks.

At least Bill thought enough of the old drive in to take a picture. I too went there when it closed looking for ONE-Sheets found one a western called "CATLOW" and that was it. The booth had been hacked to pieces GEORGIA THEATRE STYLE. They had a habit which i have written about, tearing a theatre apart once they sell it.And you have something to keep since you played there as a child.

Mike LOEWS did the same thing when it closed to LOEWS CRESCENT they tore out the screen 45 footer it was and took all the projection equiptment somewhere else, but it was theirs. The last Manager there told me that they did not wanting someone else opening it back up,although MARTIN THEATRES did run it as THE CRESCENT for about 2 more years and shut down for good.Downtown theatres were on the way out.
