I.H. Harris, president of Harris-Voeller Theatres, in the 1950's and 1960's had his office on the second floor of this theater, overlooking Overland Avenue.

Then it was called the Orpheum Theatre and later the Harris Theatre, but its marquee has been removed for years and the location is now occupied by a retail store. The seats were rather advanced for the 1950's. They were wide, metal-framed seats that would slide back and forth to allow easy access, but some times they jammed and didn't work at all.

Mr. Harris also operated the Burley Theatre, the Alfresco Drive-In (now leveled) and the Wilson Theatre in Rupert. At one time the circuit had a total of 16 theaters in Idaho and neighboring states. The Burley Theatre and the newer Century Cinema 5 are still in the family today, operated by the third generation.

I think the address for the Harris/Orpheum Theatre should be 438 Overland, I couldn't find a 1200 block of Overland. The address in the heading won't map but the addres of 438 will. I found seating listed as 400.

As Chuck posted, seating was 400 in 1955.

I.H. Harris and Paul Demordaunt of the Blackfoot, Idaho Nuart are listed in the Film Daily Yearbook of 1940 as directors of the Intermountain Theatre Owners Association.

I can find 1238 Overland Avenue on Microsoft and Google maps.
The 438 address would put this too far away out of the main business district and across the railroad tracks. I worked at the Harris when it was called the Idaho. There used to be a board on the wall on the alley side where I pasted up six sheets, or popped corn upstairs near Mr. Harris' office and lugged it in large aluminum containers over to the Burley Theatre because the Burley didn't have a corn popper. Cost of bag of popcorn, including bag: 2 cents. Sold for 10 cents. Does 500% markup sound right? If theatres are still getting a 500% mark up on popcorn, then you can do the math to figure what a bag today cost a theatre to make.

A correction to my above post,it should read "when it was called the Orpheum."
