The Mission Drive-In opened on March 27, 1948 on Roosevelt Avenue at Mission Parkway. The Mission was increased to four screens since then. It was the last remaining drive-in theater in the San Antonio area.

Santikos Theatres, which most recently operated the Mission, announced in March 2007 the theater would not be opening for the 2007 season and its future is now uncertain.

Parts of the theatre were taken down in May 2009 in preperation for redevelopment. However the structure and its massive screen will remain, as will its marquee. Open park space will allow for screenings of classic movies and other performances amid the coming offices and commercial development of the site.

The Mission opened as a single screen theatre in 1948. In the late 50s it was converted to a twin, and in 1978 two more screens were added. The original screen tower style was like many Texas drive ins built by the original owner. The San Antonio Alamo drive in's screen tower was a mirror image of the Mission's. The original mural on the Mission Drive in's tower was a painting of Mission San Jose with the bells in San Jose animated with swaying neon.

Good News santikos said today that the mission will be reopening this august 24th with second run double features on two screens only and that the conncession stand will be selling only drinks popcorn and candy. The Theatre is will charge $5.00 per car load and will close for the season at the end of november. There is still damage to the concession stand and santikos did say that they did not know if the mission would reopen next spring or not.

I feel like driving out there just to support it. Of course it's 1858 miles from my front door, but so what.

The 9 pm news tonight reported that Santikos sold out tonight with more than 1,000 cars showing up!

Ksat 12 was live at the mission and speaking from someone who is in the business i figured it would sell out this weekend but the real test will be what kind of numbers can the drive in bring in overall for the entire fall season. The mission suffered alot of damage like the projectors were more than likely almost completly destroyed scope lens alone cost alot used about $500.00. So what i am trying to say is unless over the fall season if customers show up in droves the the mission is saved if say in a month they can only say sell half of what they are doing this weekend then more than likely the mission will be closed for good cause without a regular steady turn out for santikos to recover alot of the loses they just cant keep it open and i wouldnt blame them.

SHAME!! I was just asking about this on another part of the site (link below). So is it gone? SO many good memories there, and i'm only in my early 20's. This truly saddens me. I wish there was something we could have done. I would have loved to go there regularly, but it became increasingly difficult as I live on the far Northside of San Antonio and you all know of the current gas/economical downward spiral...
Having said that, I guess it's understandable. RIP!

I now go to the Paladium at The Rim off La Cantera as it is much closer to home, and while it is an extremely nice theatre, it's not quite as special as The Mission Drive-In was; but then again, not many things are these days!

Lovely photos Lost Memory! Quite a fitting username as well.

This theatre with the 4 screens was quite unusual. Loved the night photo with the lighted glass and stars above in a Texas sky.
