News About This Theater
- Sep 23, 2004 — DC's Visions Cinema Bistro Bar To Close Tomorrow
Loew’s Theaters opened the Embassy Theater on August 29, 1963 with Janet Leigh in “Wives & Lovers” with the film star appearing ‘in person’. The Washington Post described it: “A graceful, curving facade greets the customer, who is ushered into a wide foyer carpeted in wall-to-wall blue wool…flecked…with tiny red-and-black spots. Inside the pleasant auditorium, the cleverly staggered chairs soothe the eye with blue basket-weave nylon upholstery. A fluted curtain in the same color covers the screen…and uniquely rises in Austrian curtain style.”
The Loew’s organization sold the theater in June 1978 to the Pedas Brothers, who renamed it the Embassy Circle, to fit in with their other theaters, the Circle, Inner Circle, and Outer Circle 1 and 2.
In August 1998, the Embassy Theatre closed. It reopened in 2000 as the Visions Cinema Bistro Lounge, under an independent operator, after being renoveated into one auditorium of 210 seats plus a 32 seat balcony, and a second auditorium with 115 seats. The redone theatre showed repertory, independent, and experimental films. It closed in September 2004 and has been converted into office space.
It re-opened in July 2009 as a multi-use venue, known as the AED Globe Theatre. It was closed in 2014 and was converted into a gymnasium, which opened in February 2015.

I didn’t realize this, but the theatre has reopened as the AED Globe Theatre – as a multi-use space:
“On Friday July 24 (2009), the new AED Globe Theater in Washington, D.C. will open to the public with a benefit concert by three-time Grammy Award-winning singers Ladysmith Black Mambazo. The performance will help raise funds to support Ghana CEDEM, a Ghanaian NGO dedicated to improving the quality of education for Ghana’s children.
“Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s presence at the AED Globe Theater offers the community a chance to see superb performers in an intimate setting,†said Stephen F. Moseley, President of AED. “These talented musicians will be celebrating our new theater and AED’s place in the community and world.â€
“This theater will host cultural programs, films, and discussions to encourage dialogue and bring the local community, and communities around the world, closer together,†Moseley added."

a few films of this year’s Environment Film Festival will be shown next month (March) at the theatre.
Is it still open? I don’t find a website.
I liked this as Visions, which included a cafe and bar, but then the E Street cinema opened and seemed to ciphon off a lot of their business.

lame – Dupont used to be a great place to catch a movie – now I hardly go there at all – even out to dinner.
Interestingly the Dupont Underground project “turn[ing] a pair of abandoned trolley platforms beneath Dupont Circle into a lively exhibition space capable of hosting concerts, art galleries, wine tastings or film screenings” has been curtailed and dropped the film screenings aspect [oh well…]
