I just drove by there yesterday and they were showing "Sky High." That is definitely a second-run film at this point.

According to the Holbrook Tribune News the Roxy Theater opened on May 1, 1936. The theater seats 364. The architect is not named but the contractor was the Whiting Brothers. The interior decorations were completed by Nat Smythe of the Scenic Studios of Los Angeles. The theatre was a partnership with L. Caldwell and Harry Nace of Phoenix. L. Caldwell sold his interest to Harry Nace shortly after the theater opened. L. Caldwell had operated the Liberty Theater in Holbrook that was destroyed by fire in October 1935. The opening picture was Gary Cooper in "Mr. Deeds Goes To Town."

The listings on the web site are all second run films. I drove by last week and they were showing the first Pirates of the Caribbean film.

Thanks for your interest and comments on the Roxy. It is a first-run theater - if you look closely at ken mc's picture of the Pirates of the Caribbean marquee, you will see that the poster on the wall is of the second sequel, and the upcoming one-sheet next to it is also a current movie (for July 2006.)

The web site listings are old - we don't maintain them well - the one listed as "official" on this listing is not and is not current.

We play top 10 movies in the first 4 weeks they are out - really can't afford to slip below that in this marginal market. Thanks for all your interest.

Operator in 1963 was Harry L. Nace Theaters, Inc. out of Scottsdale. Mr. Nace ran theaters in a number of Arizona towns at the time.

Why were the classic marquee and lettering painted over?
