Playhouse Theater/ Skate O-Rama

The Playhouse Theatre opened for legitimate stage productions in 1914. It quickly became a vaudeville theatre, before becoming a movie theatre. The theatre was never fitted with air-conditioning and employed two, huge fans on both sides of the stage to ‘cool’ the audience. Often the noise of these fans interfered with the hearing of softer dialogue. The Playhouse Theatre was later operated by Warner Bros. chain.

Closed by 1956, in November 1956 there was an attempt to reopen it as a skating rink named Skate-O-Rama, but ran into problems with insufficient parking. The Playhouse Theatre was demolished and today Home Liquors occupies the lot at 591-595 Main Avenue.
