This theater belonged to my uncle John Phelps, a veteran of World War II who made his home in Carthage, Tennessee, worked as a rural letter carrier, delivered newspapers from Nashville, was a taxidermist, served on the Civil Defense, and was a skilled hunter and fisherman. The Princess was on Main Street a half-block from the Square. Nothing fancy, just a small town theater serving a rural community. The Princess burned in about 1960 and never reopened. The site was built upon a few years later. My uncle died in 1992.

Isn’t Carthage the hometown of Mr. Al Gore?

Yes, Patsy, that’s correct. There was also a drive-in a few miles northwest of Carthage. It was the Green Hills Drive-In. I believe it closed in the 1980’s.
