The following info comes from a 2005 article in the Johnson City Press.
The Criterion Theater opened as the Edisonia Theater. It was operating as far back as 1914 and most likely earlier than that. Quote from the article “….the Edisonia (236 E. Main Street), projected silent and early “talkie†movies, later becoming known as the Criterion and the State”.
Another website claims that the Edisonia Theater was the first theater in Johnson City. This is a 1914 photo of the Edisonia.
In 1935 the Criterion Theater had 400 seats.
