Kingston Theater

A great old movie house in downtown Cheboygan, the Kingston Theatre was opened in March 1920 with 1,063 seats. Updated and expanded with a great original main theater with Art Deco style design. It was twinned in November 1983, tripled in June 1989 and became a 5-screen theatre in Spring of 1993.

I recently went to see Master and Commander. The marquee looks nice, but the lobby looks like the original but too old, maily a creepy 70’s look, with weird colors. The place just had a creepy feeling to it. They should clean it up more. I think it is indepentantly ran. It shows first run movies.

I visit Cheboygan every year and make it a point to go to the movies at the Kingston theater. Yes it is old looking on the inside but that is what is so special about it. Living in a big city it is nice to visit something that is from the past. The Kingston theater has character and we should be glad there are still theaters around like it. We don’t always have to go to the modern surround sound theaters.

They completely remodeled the lobby in early 2007. they ripped out the doors inside the lobby, took out the arcade games, got rid of the benches against the wall. they painted the lobby a light shade of green and they put up a row of poster display cases along the wall. they put down new carpeting and tiles in the lobby. it looks really good.

by the way, does anyone remember like 15 years ago or so when they also rented videos in their lobby? lol small town charm :)

The Kingston theater is the BEST ever. Great old fashion theater refurbished statues of old movie company logos, rocking chair seats with coke holders and movies that are always pretty current, especially for a small town. Most every Thursday night, a group of us go to the theater, always being welcomed by the friendly smiling staff always going above and beyond. Thursday, also brings you the BEST POPCORN in town at a discounted price of HALF price for your first popcorn and FREE for the second. Great movies, wonderful staff, fantastic popcorn, what is there not to like!!!!!

Cheboygan, by Matthew J. Friday (Google Books preview) says that the Kingston Theatre opened in March, 1920. The October 16, 1920, issue of Michigan Manufacturer & Financial Record confirms that the house was built that year.

The Kingston was twinned as early as November 1983, and indeed it had stereo sound in both auditoriums. It was tripled in June 1989, and became a five-screen theater in Spring 1993.
