The Northgate 1 & 2 was planned to be a twin theatre for the Jerry Lewis chain, but was taken over by Commonwealth Theatres prior to its opening on August 24, 1973. Each auditorium had 350 seats. The opening movies were “The Sound of Music” & “White Lightning”.

That is an odd looking theater. Middle of a shopping plaza, cheapy undescript marquee. Looks like it could pass for another shop.

i am not 100 percent for sure but i do think that the marquee was from the starlight drive in theater and was moved here in the 70s or 80s after the starlight closed down.the theater for years was known as the northgate theater, it was a dollar dump for while and really became a dump. than in 2000 or so its named changed to the stargate
i really miss this place . rip

I don’t know how I got thinking about this place, but I grew up in Rapid City and saw a number of movies at this one, while it was called the Northgate. A pretty crummy theater, I remember my Dad claiming it was originally built as one of the Jerry Lewis theaters.

Besides it’s mediocre quality, the other thing I remember about this place was that on one side of the lobby, there was this huge picture mural of a USA map populated by old movie star pictures (IIRC). I always thought this was pretty cool. I think this was put up by Commonwealth, who operated the place at the time. Wish I had a picture of that mural…

The Northgate Theatre project was announced as a $145,000 concept to be opened by Jerry Lewis Cinemas. By the time the delayed cinema was launched, the Lewis Circuit had run into financial difficulty and this property became a Commonwealth Circuit concept.

The Northgate Theatres opened on August 24, 1973. Two equal 350 seat auditoriums were created with opening shows of “Sound of Music” and “White Lightning.” The theatre soldiered on completing its thirty year lease.
