9G Drive-In

Viewing: Photo | Street View

Opened April 13, 1962, the 9G Drive-In was a popular movie venue in the 1960’s and 1970’s. For most of the 1970’s however, it went to alternative screenings, presumably to attract a full audience by offering diverse attractions, as there were four other drive-in theatres in about a 15-mile radius. It went thru two phases before it was torn down.

First it showed concert films, then it went at al X-Rated adult films. (Actually, that was in times when smut movies actually had a plot, and they were worth watching). The 9G Drive-In was closed in 1985.

This drive-in screened porno movies in its later days. This was possible because the screen was not visible from the highway. Sneaking in on foot through the woods was a popular pastime for the local teenagers.

To the best of my recollection, the 9G drive-in closed down sometime around the early or mid ‘80s.

According to this Excel document I found on the web, the 9G opened in 1964 and closed in 1985.

The same document makes tantalizing references to two other local drive-ins: the Fishkill Drive-In (1955-1980) and yet another one in Hyde Park called the Auto Vision (1949-1961).

When I look at the info at the link provided by lostmemory and the picture above it seems that the name should be “9G Drive Theatre”
