This theatre was a former post office in the historic Federal Building. The former Federal Building is Gainesville’s finest example of Palladian Classical Revival architecture. It was begun in May 1909 and completed in March 1911 at a cost of $160,000. To locals, this theatre is simply known as “The Hipp”.

The building was designed by Thomas Ryerson, with J.K. Taylor as supervising architect according to the Hipp website.
