The City Hall Theatre is in the low block of the City Hall in Edinburgh Place on Hong Kong Island.

The City Hall, opened on 2nd March 1962, is a Bauhaus style building with high block, low block and a memorial garden. It was built and run by the Urban Council of the Hong Kong Government until its dissolution on 1st January, 2000 by the Hong Kong SAR Government. It is part of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of the Hong Kong SAR Government.

The theatre has a 463-seat auditorium in stadium seating with a well equipped stage for stage performances and recitals. Its proscenium opening is 9.65m by 5.08m. It has two Simplex [35mm] and two Eili EX-9100 [16mm] projectors. Its sound system is Dolby-Stereo. Besides stage performances and recitals, it is
the venue of the International Film Festival and other film festivals.

The theatre also served as the venue of Studio One and other film clubs in the 1960’s, 1970’s and 1980’s.
