The State Cinema was opened on 2nd December 1935. It was independently operated. It was closed between 1978 and 1983. By 1991 it had been converted into a 2-screen cinema.
The State Cinema was being operated by the Ward Anderson group of Empire Cinemas and it was closed on 30th July 1998, the day before their new 7-screen, IMC Cinema opened in the town.
In 1999, proposals to convert the State Cinema into an arts centre to be known as the ‘Altered State’ were never carried out and in the Autumn of 2002, the building suffered a fire. It was demolished in late-2006.

My photograph of the closed State was taken in November 1998.
The State Cinema was opened in the early 1940’s. It was independently operated and was closed in the mid-1970’s.
The building stood empty for several years and fell into disrepair. By 1991 it had re-opened and had been converted into a 3-screen cinema.
wrong information….state cinema was never closed in the 7os 80s or 90s…also was a two screen cinema…not a 3 screen
The State opened on 2 December 1935 with Ruggles of Red Gap. It remained closed between 1978 and 1983. There were plans to add two more screens in 1994 by acquiring Allen’s Garage but I don’t know if this was ever done.
