Little is known of its early history, although a cinema on the same site is listed in Kelly’s Directory of Devon in 1923. This cinema was referenced as the Cinedrome Electric Theatre. It had 600 seats, and occasional variety was performed on the 20 feet deep stage.

It retained the Cinedrome name until at least 1944. By 1947 it was known as the Maxime Cinema and this lasted until at least 196. By 1966 it was known as The Cinema. By 1980 it had been re-named Royalty Cinema, when it was operated by Scott Cinemas chain.

The Royalty Cinema closed in the early-1980’s, sometime after the Summer of 1986. It was demolished to make way for the Dartmouth Clinic that still stands on the site in 2009.
