Charing Cross Cinema

The building was in use as an amusement arcade, with automatic machines, when it was converted into a cinema. It opened in November 1909 as the Charing Cross Fonomatograph Theatre. It had a long narrow auditorium with seating on a single raked floor. It had rear projection, which gave a brighter picture on the screen. There was a tea room, cafe and a ladies saloon over the entrance and part of the auditorium.

By June 1911, it had been re-named Charing Cross Electric Theatre. Last known as the Charing Cross Cinema, it was closed around 1922, and was demolished in a road widening scheme which affected that stretch of the Strand.

Since the 1930’s, the London headquarters of Halifax Building Society has stood on the site.
