Opened in 1983 as one of the first multiplex theatres in the Wilmington area under Charlotte based Stewart and Everett Theatres Corporation. They operated several movie-houses in the Wilmington area and surrounding New Hanover County.
Stewart and Everett had the Cinema 6 under it operations until it was acquired by Carmike in 1986. Carmike Cinemas operated the Cinema 6 until its closing in 2005.

Was built in 1983 by Stewart and Everett Theaters on the site of the former Oleander drive in. Carmike took over December 1986 after their purchase of the Stewart and Everett Theaters chain. The theater became a second run theater in the early 00s. I remember going to see 2nd run movies there is 2005 for $1.50. Carmike closed the theater in January 2006 when The University of North Carolina at Wilmington made an offer to purchase. The property is currently owned by UNCW. The parking lot is used as overflow for students and the theater building is used for UNCW’s film studies program. On the theater building still remains the sign “CINEMA 6” wich until recently was still lit at night for some reason. The building is
white stucco and doesn’t show any signs of decay.

above is a link for a newspaper article dated Januery 18, 2006. It talkes about the closing of this theater and the sale to UNCW
I passed this theater last night on my way to “Mayfaire Town Center Cinema 16” and noticed that the outdoor movie poster display cases were on. Empty but on. Odd sight.
thanks for the pictures.
Cinema 6 in Wilmington was Carmike’s last discount theater east of Raleigh; it replaced the Independence Mall 3 as Wilmington’s second-run house.
