Savoy Theatre

The building which housed the Temple Theatre was built in 1885. The Temple Theatre was opened on March 1, 1909. Renamed the Columbia Theatre on September 9, 1912. By 1942 it had been renamed Savoy Theatre. Originally with 1,012-seats, later seating for the theatre was listed at 700. Initially it was operated by Co-Op Theatres of Michigan and later by Goodrich Theatres.

The Savoy Theatre was Goodrich’s first Theatre. It was twinned on March 30, 1973. This second screen opened as an adult theatre with Linda Lovelace in “Deep Throat”.

The Savoy Theatre closed in 1979 and was later demolished.

From 1950 a view of the Savoy Theatre as it had looked since 1930 and from the same year a post restoration view of the Savoy in Grand Rapids.

The building was originally built in 1885 per the Box Office article about the 1974 remodel linked below. So a theatre may not have been the original tenant, unless it was for stage plays or a hall of some kind.
